Overview of the Role

We are seeking a self-motivated, energetic, and highly detail-oriented Senior Research Assistant / Scientist (depending on experience) with a proven background in cell culture to join our Cell Development team. We are particularly interested in candidates with experience in cell line development.

You will be working within Orbit’s Cell Development group to establish reporter and receptor cell lines for our functional screening programme. This involves transfection, clone selection techniques, handling of multiple clones, running cell-based and mechanistic assays as well as undertaking diverse molecular biology techniques (e.g., molecular cloning, qPCR) independently. Other responsibilities include support of the cell based functional screen.

You will also prepare data for reports and presentations within the company and assist in the drafting and review of laboratory protocols and work instructions.

The position is a lab-based role, demanding an enthusiastic and proactive mindset, along with good organisational skills and an ability for problem solving. The successful candidate will be given opportunities for training and development and will be encouraged to contribute to implementing new technologies and processes.

Job Responsibilities

  • Establishing and maintaining cell lines.
  • Design and execute experiments for discovery and characterization of clones.
  • Handling and preparation of cells for analysis by flow cytometry (including cell sorting).
  • Support the cellular functional screen
  • Analyse, interpret and summarise results for presentation at internal meetings.
  • Contributing to discussions and sharing research findings with colleagues.
  • Documenting research findings clearly in an electronic lab book.
  • Assist in producing and collating procedures, guidelines and reports.
  • Contribute to general lab duties.
  • Ability to work flexibly to meet changing demands of projects.

Job Requirements

Essential

  • A minimum of an MSc in a biology related discipline with a year of laboratory experience.
  • Experience of mammalian cell culture, including routine passage of adherent cells and transfection techniques.
  • Experience in cell line development.
  • Ability to perform basic analytical techniques such as SDS-PAGE and Western blot.
  • Broad knowledge of biological sciences with an emphasis on molecular and cell biology.
  • Willingness to learn new techniques.
  • Strong communication and team working skills.
  • Capable of troubleshooting technical issues and ability to develop a solid understanding of the direction and design of a given project.

Desirable

  • Ability to perform molecular biology techniques such as molecular cloning, DNA isolation, PCR, and qPCR.
  • Practical experience of assay development.
  • Practical experience of flow cytometry.
  • Practical experience of immunofluorescence imaging.
  • Solid knowledge of molecular biology techniques.
  • Some experience with designing molecular cloning strategy.
  • Some experience with CRISPR.
